During the course, learners will gain knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Using the design program Canva to create digital graphic outcomes.
  • Branding for a brief and/or for a personal brand or business.
  • Colour theory, logo design and typography basics.
  • Online advertising and content for social media marketing.
  • Creating a basic webpage design using Canva.

Objectives of this qualification:

This qualification aims to provide fundermental graphic design skills and an understanding of the main principles of graphic design, giving a strong foundation for any future progression.

The objectives of this qualification are to enable learners to develop a portfolio of design work.

Qualification Grading Criteria:

  • Unit 1. Explore graphic processes, materials and techniques.
  • Unit 2. Explore sources of ideas in a graphic design context.
  • Unit 3. Explore and develop graphic design ideas
  • Unit 4. Produce and present final graphic outcomes.

Suggested materials List

  • Laptop/computer to access the course and to create digital design work.
  • The use of Canva will be used throughout to create design work as well as the learner’s course portfolio.
  • While we are registered with Canva for Education, we will be able to offer enrolled learners free access to Canva, utilising all the usually paid for functionality.
  • Access to a camera or phone camera may be useful.

Optional:

At times, you may wish to create design work by hand and therefore the following would be useful:

  • Paper to work on, with a good weight- no less than say 130gsm. Generally do not use printer paper to sketch with colour onto as it doesn’t have texture or correct thickness.
  • Pencils in a range of grades, I.e. 6B, 4B, 2B, HB.
  • Eraser- I can’t emphasise enough the importance of a quality eraser.
  • A selection of fine liner pens and marker pens.
  • Medium to add colour, such as a quality set of colour pencils. Watercolour pencils tend to apply their colour more effectively.
